"Intersection of Destinies Part 2": The Inside Track....

Discuss this story on a forum thread!

Thanks to intermittent work on other stories, the completion of Intersection of Destinies Part 2 has taken nearly nine months. I hope to not work on more than two stories at once in the future!

I made up Lana Lorwin on the spot, but who knows? She may make a narrative appearance someday....but anyways, think of her as Hearthstone's version of Jessica Simpson....

Based on these events, I was asked if my beloved wife was "as mean as her cartoon counterpart" (being that I have stated the Ketterlings are Hearthstonian versions of us). It would be better to say, that Mrs H doesn't put up with crap any more than Annabelle does. But, she will also forgive readily anyone who is truly sorry, as also happened here. This scene is also classic honor-shame paradigm in action, by the way.

I may or may not have made clear from the earlier ST stories that the entrapment of the K'rek'skran behind the portals only allows them to possess people outside the portals. They can't get out with their own bodies or bring over their shapeshifting abilities. This scene relates the first stage in their entrapment -- but look forward to some stories in which some of them get loose....

That kitchen faucet? It's ours. Hee hee....

So now we know the connection between Abigail and Annabelle. Some readers had had a speculation that one of them was a clone, and a reader wrote me an email asking if Annabelle had travelled back in time and what in the world was she doing married to Eidolon then. But it's plain old genetics at work. Do expect to see Calypso Shr'ker in some far future story....

Had to make a change on page 19. Originally Brom said "styrofoam" but an alert reader noted that syrofoam is petroleum-derived, and Hearthstone doesn't have petroleum. So now we have "coynafoam" instead. Not sure what this is now, but it is probably a plant-based product involving cellulose and bakelite. Maybe there was even a Tilkrig or Drovine version of George Washington Carver there who pioneered use of a particular plant.

You just know that all the talk show hosts on Hearthstone are Amentazari....

The theme of mutual help between Sheila and Brom will recur again....even though we already know they won't be covenant partners. A reader, Leonhard, gets kudos for the inspiration of using Sheila's morning calisthenics as a theme.

The inspiration for loftuscite and its effects? You'll have to follow my OTHER site to learn that...but with reader input, I have envisioned it as a sort of tea to be brewed and drunk. The names of the thugs are significant, too, but again, you have to find the right website to know why....

Nice illustration of the trials of radio wave transmission in Hearthstone's magnetic field here.

Want to know more about the why of this? You can find out in the Crucible of Time miniseries, about 5 years from now...or subscribe now and find out in the bonus scene.

The prophecy concerning the Ketterlings will not be fulfilled until the future Planet in Rebellion series.

Just a note to remember why Eidolon is not going along -- in ST #4 Eidolon noted that there was a sort of dead area around the island of the selalighi where he can't use the power of the seraphs, so he'd be useless there. Why this dead area exists will be explained in ST #6.

Is Eidolon that endearing to the ladies (as seen here and in his bonus story)? I'll save some of that for the Crucible of Time series when we learn about his origins, but you can imagine even now that he is often lonely and seeks out platonic friendships -- close, but not so close that he'd suffer for it as he did with Abigail when he lost them to death. It would be quite a tightrope to walk for that many years.

The mechanics here may seem cloudy, but here's what happened: Felicity had cut her own palm first (hence the prior panel where she was pulling down the right wrist wrap) so that her blood would be on the knife. Thus the effect was to keep both the knife AND the cut hidden behind her back. Once she sliced Brom and added his blood to the knife, she switched the knife to the left hand (after letting go of Brom's hand) and opened the right hand to show her own cut as a witness to the fact that she had just cut herself and that blood from both of them was on the knife.

That's it for now. We'll be back with ST #6 very soon!
